The milliary milestone.
It is part of a milliary milestone turned into a stoap in the 17th century for the Saint Claude chapel, that stood near the harbour of Veyrier.
The letters engraved on the column are :
M for millia
P for passuum
That is a thousand steps plus 23.
At the origin, this milestone, erected about 307-310, under the Roman Empire of Constantin, was placed next to the Brogny bridge (on the north of Annecy) on the route : Casuaria (Faverges) – Sevriacus (Sevrier) – Boutae (Annecy) – Genova (Genève), 23 miles from Genova, on the Roman road likking Milan to Strasburgh.
